Capital punishment is currently authorized in 31 states, by the federal government and the U.S. military. In recent years, New Mexico (2009), Illinois (2011), Connecticut (2012), Maryland (2013) and Nebraska (2015) have abolished the death penalty, replacing it with a sentence of life imprisonment with no possibility for parole. Meanwhile, states across the country continue to debate its fairness, reliability and cost of implementation.
NCSL – State and Capital Punishment
Problem:
Crime has been falling for the last 20-30 years and there is no proof that the death penalty deters crime. The death penalty is actually 3-4 more expensive than life in prison due to legal, administrative and court fees paid by taxpayers. Texas counties cover all of the costs associated with the prosecution and defense of capital defendants, not the Texas state government.
Solution:
Abolish the Texas death penalty
